Date
OASIS to launch Open Matters Forum, 19 Aug

Jane Harnad

Dear Baseline Members,

On 19 August, we plan to launch a new virtual series called ‘Open Matters.’ Led by OASIS Executive Director, Guy Martin, these forums are informal gatherings that will engage the open development ecosystem, addressing key topics within open source and open standards communities, while helping facilitate cross-industry collaboration.

Mark your calendar!
Open Matters, episode one

Wednesday, 19 August

11:00 AM EST (15:00 UTC)

Each episode will include interviews with technology luminaries as they share their insights and debate issues on topics that matter to both the open standards and open source world. A live discussion with the audience will complete each event.

Our first episode will be a one-on-one conversation between Guy and our OASIS Board of Directors Chairman, Gershon Janssen. This will be your opportunity to get to know Guy better, ask him questions, and learn more about his vision on how best to link these two communities.

If you would like to attend the live stream and interact with Guy and Gershon, sign up to attend here.

You'll receive a Zoom webinar passcode shortly after.

Questions are welcome in advance. Send questions to jane.harnad@....

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Regards, Jane

BTW: Unable to attend? Free access to the recorded video will be available after the forum on the OASIS YouTube site.

Welcome Unibright and Nethermind to the Baseline and Ethereum OASIS Open Project!

Mary Beth Minto

OASIS is pleased to announce that Unibright and Nethermind have become the newest Sponsors of Baseline Protocol and the Ethereum OASIS Open Project.

Unibright is a team of blockchain specialists, architects, developers and consultants with 20+ years of experience in business processes and integration. They turn ideas into businesses, and improve processes with the help of blockchain technology. They develop enterprise applications, invest in start ups, build process modelling tools and create a 360° ecosystem around tokenized assets.

Nethermind, founded in 2017 by a small team of world-class technologists, builds Ethereum solutions for developers and enterprises. Boosted by a grant from the Ethereum Foundation in August 2018, their team has worked tirelessly to deliver the fastest Ethereum client in the market, optimised to the very last byte. In addition to the client, they've built a peer-to-peer Data Marketplace, run multiple free Advanced EVM workshops to educate developers, and been actively involved with Ethereum Core development.

Unibright and Nethermind join the other Baseline Sponsors whose financial commitment ensures that the project remains open to all technical participants and receives the resources it needs to succeed.

Stay tuned tomorrow at 10am us-eastern for a big press release! New baselining demo.  Kudos to Unibright, Provide, Envision Blockchain -- and SAP, MSFT Dynamics, and LimeChain.

And we are working hard to make participation in mainnet-supporting projects like Baseline "safe" for corporate participants. Finalizing this article. Would love comments:  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1x7dUQfANc1B2EVSEBykplv7U2f_p7Fn9uK9DaKGxaqs/edit?usp=sharing

The issue with XML,and JSON using OpenAPI and by extension EDI messages

Sam Bacha

There is a relevant gap in OpenAPI spec in which it does not allow a fairly common modeling pattern (multiple child objects of the same base type with different roles/under different names) for XML-based APIs, ironically due to a limitation in JSON Schema. This is supposed to be addressed in this RFC, https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-handrews-json-schema-02#appendix-E, as a draft. This is where OASIS can come in and help make this process for XML to JSON and by extension SOA to RESTful possible without having a set of parsers/mappings in a job queue necessary, as is the case right now.

A problem we have come into in production is that the original JSON representation of a number will not be available (there is no way to tell the difference between a 1 and 1.0, we have even run into some using 0.0 and 0 weirdly), causing some onboarding issues.

I think this is a perfect use case for having a baseline for how to best express the future JSON hyperschema, you can find more information here: https://json-schema.org/;

and here https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-handrews-json-schema-hyperschema-00.

Would like to know thoughts on this from baseline's perspective and OASIS

Re: Baseline Sponsorship

Carol Geyer

Let me echo John's appreciation for everyone's contributions to Baseline. The response we've had since our launch has been overwhelming. In the history of OASIS, we've never seen a community come together more quickly or more enthusiastically than you have. It's exciting to imagine where you'll be a year from now.

To ensure the Baseline community has the resources and support it deserves--and to start new activities like incentive programs and events--we do need to secure corporate sponsorship.

Baseline Sponsors will be recognized in a variety of ways and have the option to be represented on the Ethereum OASIS Open Project Governing Board. Annual sponsor dues are on a sliding scale to enable small and large companies alike to support the work.

We're holding a call with stakeholders on 21 May at 11:30-noon ET. If your company may be in a position to help fund Baseline, contact me for a calendar invitation or more details.

Thanks,
Carol

Nobody expected that we'd go from three companies to hundreds of active members in just a few weeks. That kind of growth is exciting, and it is leading to real results posting sooner than expected. Stay tuned for announcements such as the SAP/Dynamics Integration Demo this month and be sure you check the ways to stay informed and get involved at https://baseline-protocol.org. (And thanks to TJ Chmielewski for improving the design and content of the site.)

One of the main reasons we chose the Ethereum OASIS Open Project to govern the Baseline Protocol was that it allows everyone to contribute and have a say in the direction of the initiative--without requiring any participation fees. It costs nothing to be a contributor. It costs nothing to be a TSC or SSC member. And no amount of sponsorship money buys a single vote on who becomes a Maintainer or sits on the Technical Steering Committee. We're 100% committed to remaining a truly open community.

That said, some sponsorship funding is going to be important to support all this remarkable growth. The OASIS staff have been very kind in supporting us at levels far above what our current level of funding (thanks to the EEA, ConsenSys and the Ethereum Foundation) would normally permit. OASIS provides all our collaboration tools, infrastructure, IP management, governance administration, and all the community support we get from Jory and the rest of the OASIS staff.

Please help, if you can, by encouraging your employer to become a Baseline Sponsor. Annual dues are reasonable and set on a sliding scale, making it affordable for companies of all sizes (from as low as a thousand dollars to twenty-five for the largest enterprises).

Funding also will let us set up developer incentive programs to reward outstanding contributors and encourage work on critical areas. We are working on a premium sponsorship level for companies that want to fund incentives and have a say in what those incentives are.

We'll be holding a short briefing and Q&A for potential Baseline Sponsors on May 21st. If you--or others at your company--would like to receive a calendar invite, please contact carol.geyer@....
